La Ghirlandina
Ghirlandina – The Symbol of Modena
Standing 86 meters tall, the Ghirlandina Tower is the unmistakable symbol of the city of
Modena. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site together with the Cathedral and
Piazza Grande, it rises gracefully above the historic center, marking the rhythm of city life for
centuries with the sound of its bells.
The City’s Famous 200 Steps
Located next to the apse of Modena Cathedral, the Civic Tower dates back to the 12th century,
although its current form was completed in the 14th century. The name “Ghirlandina” comes
from the double ring of balustrades that crown its spire, resembling a garland—an
architectural detail cherished by the people of Modena.
The tower is open to visitors, who can climb its 200 steps to reach the top. From there, the
view over the historic center and the rooftops of Modena is truly unique. Along the ascent, on
the fifth floor, you’ll find the fascinating Stanza dei Torresani, the ancient residence of the
tower’s guardians, where you can admire historically significant capitals whose origins remain
shrouded in mystery.
